Since I have last updated everyone I have had a lot of changes in my life, some good, some bad and all of them are difficult to get used. I have completed a fully illustrated Pride and Prejudice and I have written a few books, all of them need editing and I am attempting to run a kickstarter because without it I might not be able to publish Pride and Prejudice, since I have to copyright my art that goes into the book and I should buy my own ISBN numbers. I haven't posted in a while, I have been super busy.  I wanted to announce my latest project that goes hand in hand with this blog.  I'm working on a youtube movie called dolls and prejudice. If it is a success, it will be the first full movie of pride and prejudice made only with dolls.  I'm making dresses, buying more dolls aka actors and making sets.  I can't wait for everyone to see it, but it may take a long time.

Brittany has written some of the most endearing movies I have ever seen. And I'm so happy that she is the first of my “Austen Writer Interviews.” I had so many questions.  Austentatious is a family-friendly sitcom where some of our favorite Jane Austen characters are combined in the modern day.

Who came up with the idea for the show?

I can't remember who came up with the idea specifically, but it was a combination of my brother, my sister and me. My sister and I are Jane Austen fans, and all of us are always collaborating.

How long does the show take to write?

Each episode took a week or two to write, with revisions and fine-tuning.

When did your show start, because I noticed a difference from episode three or four. Suddenly everyone's hair was longer and two of the actresses had different colored hair. Was that due to budget constraints or did it take awhile for the show to get picked up?
 

I can't remember when it started but we did take a break in between episodes 3 and 4 to see which avenue for the show would be best. Once we decided on how best to release it to the public, we went back into production and finished up Season 1.

I used to like to write plays and Jane Austen is my favorite and I'm interested in how productions come to be. I have seen some of your company's other works like Scents and Sensibility a modern comedy version of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility that came out a few years ago. Can you tell me about some of your other work? Is there anything you'd like to tell me about the production, sets or actors?
 

Some of my other work is "Christmas Angel," which I really like the feel of that story. I wrote a drama called "Nowhere Safe" that incorporated cyberbullying, and I think that turned out really well. "Scents and Sensibility" of course was a fun story--I'd love to do more around the Jane Austen arena, and that's why I love "Austentatious"--it incorporates multiple stories and characters! Nothing really extraordinary about production--the actors we work with are wonderful. I love the chemistry between Emma and Grant (Knightley).  The actor who plays Colin was so delightfully awkward in his performance. It was hard to keep a straight-face as we filmed.

What influenced you to go entirety digital? Unlike some digital platforms like digital theater based out of London, you do have a DVD out, which is awesome. Can you tell me anything about the DVD and its special features?

We do have a DVD out with season 1. It has been in Walmart and online stores and others (Amazon, etc). Digital though is such a timely way to release a series now. It coincides with how people watch series now.

Most importantly with so many storylines left untapped, will there be a season two?

We want to do a season 2. We have avenues already planned for the storylines, but whether we do it or not will depend on how many people are asking for it and if the digital "stations" want a second season too.

I rather love that this is a family show, it's so adorable.

There's enough things that are dark or racy in entertainment. What's great about Jane Austen is that fans don't expect that. There's plenty of drama in life but it doesn't need to be magnified so that it's inappropriate for family viewing.

I totally agree. I have to have a plug for your show which has a nearly 5 star rating on Amazon, you can buy the DVD or buy and download the episodes from Amazon from as law as .99 per episode. For 10 to twenty dollars you can own the show without even leaving your home. 15.99 for HD if you buy the entire season and 9.99 for SD. Which of course is how I watched all of season 1.

Love or Not

this lens' photo Everyone wants to fall in love, but picking the right person can be extremely difficult. How can you tell what you're feeling is real and not just a trick of your mind or your heart. A fancy that you yourself have created to stop from being lonely. Many of us have been responsible for our own one sided romances. These romances often only hurt ourselves.

Jane Austen understood such things and by looking at the sometimes dysfunctional relationships in Pride and Prejudice you can better understand the world of love and mistrust.

Mr. Collins

When I say shoot for Mr. Darcy and not Mr. Collins, I am not talking about wealth. Mr. Collins had a littleness in his character that would make him ill suited to be a good match for almost anyone.

Miss Lucas was not a very pretty woman, she was 27 and if she hadn’t married she would have been a large financial strain on her family since women would not leave their family homes unless they were married or employed as a governess. Which because of their sightly higher status would have been impossible for her.

He might have been her best or only choice in the end, but she wasn’t his only choice. Mary Bennet was even attractive than Miss Lucas, but she liked him. If he had taken better care he would have had a wife who actually loved him.



Mr. Bennet

It is not just women who pick the wrong spouse for themselves in Pride and Prejudice. Look at Mr. Bennet, he married his wife when they were young and his dear wife was not in ill humor yet. Mr. Bennet was a fun, sweet, humorous and intelligent fellow, his wife who was only in good humor while they were young in love and in no fear of having their estate entailed away after his death never understood him. Not even after 25 years of marriage. Her only goal in life was to have her five daughters married well, his goal is that they did not marry the wrong person as he did. Especially Eliza, because she was his favorite and Jane was his second favorite. He loves all his children, but they were a lot like his wife. Eliza had his smarts and wit, while Jane had the kindest heart of anyone in the household.



The Gardners

Darcy and Eliza were not the only true love match in this book. Though they lived in the cheap side of London, Mr. and Mrs. Gardner had money to travel and a deep love for each other and the rest of their family.

The Gardners became a favorite at Pemberly, because they were the means of bringing Darcy and Eliza back together, if they had not taken Eliza to the lake counties they may not have married.

Poor Lydia

And here we have the worst choice of all. Lydia choosing to runaway with Wickman. Why did he do it, sure he was in debt to his eyeballs and was soon going to have to move on anyway. Was it revenge, did he somehow know Darcy’s attraction to Eliza? I’m sure he realized by the change of Eliza’s countenance that she knew of his dealings with Mr. Darcy’s sister.



Charles and Jane

Charles and Jane were perfect for one another and seemed to fall in love at once, but interference from his family friends and his own fear of rejection almost ended their romance before it could start.

If it were not for Darcy telling Charles the truth about all that have happened these characters would have ended up sad and alone.



Love at Last

Love alone is never enough to change someone, it was the lack of Eliza’s love that changed Darcy in the end. He was forced by her strong words to him after her refusal that made him look at himself in the mirror and for the first time he did not like what he saw. He always thought of himself as a good person, he then had to realize how wrong his pride really was.

She had to get over her pride and prejudices, to realize that he really was a good person despite his blundering attempts to win her heart. She had to realize she didn’t know herself as well as she thought.

In the end they loved each other dearer than any other couple in this book and isn’t that what we’re all after, a good happy ending.

It is a sad reality that often life circumstances, such as Charlotte's, intrude into many lives and people often cannot or simply do not wait until they find a good match for marriage. Tis also true, one must know themselves before they can know who they will be happy walking through life with.

A full year of Jane Austen

More Austen than you can handle in one Year You might think that there are only six novels by Jane Austen and you would be correct, but there is an entire world of Jane Austen out there that I would like to tell you about. More movies come out every few years, there are web shows, TV shows with Regency and Jane Austen episodes.

There is also works of Jane Austen that you may have never even heard about. Short stories, and plays she created when she was a wild minded teenager. There are also a few stories she never finished.

Murder Mystery Style

Murder Mystery Style, Jane Austen Party Party Like It's 1799 A regency murder mystery party is perhaps the best way to celebrate Halloween. This party will never be a true Regency Halloween party because even though Halloween was based on several accent European holidays it was not widely celebrated until America adopted the tradition in the 1800s. However just because it may not be authentic, doesn't mean you can't do everything in your power to make it feel that way. You can throw a party that Jane Austen herself would be proud of.

How to invite your guest is a lot easier than you think. In the regency times parties were by word of mouth or by handwritten notes or letters, however since you want your guest to feel like it is a grand occasion worthy of dressing up for. You can find regency style invitations at www.zazzle.com/loudesigns. You can make them yourself, use aged parchment style paper and a print font in a pretty classic style. Fold the paper over and seal it with sealing wax. After you have stamped the wax with a stamper, write the name of the invitee on the back and have these hand delivered by people in period costumes. How do you cook for a regency style food on a budget. No one wants to spend 300 dollars on a half eaten cake. Roasted duck, goose or even turkey can be used as a main course. Cornish game hen can be used as a fabulous man dish. It is great for the hostess on a budget, lets say you have ten guests including yourself. These small hens are about two dollars at ALDI stores, one per-person is actually too much, cut in half after they are cooked is actually better. Candied carrots, celery stocks and french rolls served with creamed butter. Fruit tarts and teacakes for dessert. Fruit tarts can be bought at most huge chain stores or you could even make them using Wonton paper, which is lighter and crispier. Teacakes are like round cupcakes with wedding cake frosting. Decorate with lit or flickering battery operated candles, you want a sense of romance to fill the air. Use flowers dried or fresh, classic furnishings like trunks and wood items to decorate your house, and remove the overly modern things that would distract form your event. Think like the TV and hide the phone and computer. Let there be music if you cannot hire the string section of the local school band or hire the local piano teacher to play classical music you can buy CDs or download music to your ipod or other mp3 players. The mystery part of the party is the most creative. Assign your quests and yourself their names and or titles for the mystery game. This can be people from regency history, your favorite songstress or characters from books. Say you get to be Jane Austen because it is your event, well you could assign your friends the names of people from her novels. Catherine Morland, Emma Woodhouse and so forth and if you have a rather large party you could use names from Jane’s youthful short stories and unfinished works as well.

National Mystery Series Week

National Mystery Series Week. Mysteries series in books started mainly in the 1800s and continue to this day. Where was I when the first week in October was dedicated as National Mystery Series Week? Well this year I was celebrating and I didn't even realize it. I've been sick laid up with a head cold and though I was not curled up with a good mystery book, I was curled up under my favorite blanket watching murder mysteries from the BBC on my instant netflicks account. This was started 1998 and this is the 17 yrear that is has been a National Holiday celebrated by bookworms and movie buffs alike. To celebrate you can have a murder mystery night with friends, curl up with a good book or grab your favorite blanket and watch a TV series or mystery movie, which is what I did. This drawing of mine is titled The Jane Austen Creey Rice drawing. This is based on the Jane Austen Rice painting, which was owned by the Rice family, which is how it got its name. Painted by a Russian artist in the late 18th century when Jane Austen was just a girl in her mid teens, the painting is still highly disputed today. Some saying the subject of the painting was far too pretty to the writer of Pride and Prejudice. Murder Mystery Night Sherlock This updated Sherlock which is a Masterpiece Mystery series is set in modern day London and stars one of my favorite British actors, Martin Freeman shines as Doctor Watson and if you have netflix like I do, they have just uploaded season two for your watch pleasure, they game is afoot. Midsomer Murders Midsomer Murders is a series set in the fictional town of midsomer and you can guess the rest, yes there are murders. Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby is somewhat of a regular bloke and a very good copper, him and his partner get wrapped in the craziest, insane, wild cases. He is married and has an actress daughter. I am just entering series 4 and I watched two just this week. Inspector Lewis Inspector Lewis regions the force after a three year break, after the sudden death of his wife. He is a average guy, he has a nose for crime and a good sense of right and wrong, but he is surrounded by pompous intellectuals in this university town, he has a a partner who himself was well educated and could of done anything he wanted, but he wanted to be a police officer. I've watched a good few of these as well this week and can't wait until more of this Masterpiece Mystery series come out on netflix, really I might not be able to wait, when I get through to season 5. Murder She Wrote Murder She Wrote, well I wanted to add an American show, of course this actress is originally British. It was great in the beginning, but by the end the plots were a bit thin. It did last a good 12 years. I watched this for years as a child and loved the one episode that was supposed to be based on one of her books.

The New Jane Austen might seem strange to you since Jane Austen died almost 200 years ago, but every couple of years more movies, books using her characters and web shows come out. 1. The Lizzie Bennet Dairies (youtube) came out in 2012. 2. In 2013 the movie version of Austenland was released. 3. Coming soon to PBS station near you Death Comes to Pemberley. If you live across the pond, it has already been released on DVD. I debated if I should buy it or not, however the DVD is very pricy and I decided to wait until November until it is released in the US. Yes I have a region free player. 4. A modern persuasion is also supposed to come to theaters this year.

I can only review wait I have seen and what has been released. Austenland is about a girl named Jane. She spends all of her money on a Jane Austen vacation, this a romantic vacation filled with actors who pretend to fall in love with you. It is a cute movie, somewhat predicable to me, because I can also pick out the Wickham like character. From what I hear it is not as good as the book, but it is still worth renting. It stars Keri Russell and JJ Fields. If you are a huge Jane Austen fan you might remember him from the 2007 version of Northanger Abbey. He was adorable in that movie.

The Lizzie Bennet Dairies is about a 24 year grad student who is working on a degree in Communications and technology and her personal video blog is part of her Thesis. All of the younger characters are there, including Mr. Collins and Fitzwilliam, Mr. Darcy's Cousin. The older characters Darcy's aunt Catherine and Lizzie's parents are only in the story through Lizzie's eyes, as she mocks them in costume. The story is very modern, it is also funny, engaging, compelling and very hard to stop watching. I went to bed at 6am the first day I started watching these videos. There are 100 videos ranging from 2 min to 6min and a few extra videos from the point of view of a few other characters. If you don't mind it being modern, you will love this new version.

This highly disputed painting of Jane Austen is from my own shop. It came from the collection of a Mr. Rice was was a relation to Jane Austen, he was always told this painting was of Jane Austen and he believed to the end that it was her. I think it is too. If you see the other paintings and drawings of her you can see the same rounded face, dark eyes and slightly larger nose.
